BINTULU: Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh has called on voters to come out and vote for the Jepak by-election as voter turnout is still quite low.

“The turnout is not satisfactory at the moment. I urge all voters to come out so that we can achieve our target of 65%. There is still time until 5.30pm to cast your ballots," he told reporters after visiting the SK Bintulu polling station here.

Turnout for the Jepak by-election was 33% at noon on Saturday (Nov 4), according to Abdul Ghani.

The EC chairman also requested the contesting parties to mobilise their supporters to come out and vote.

The Jepak by-election is a three-cornered fight between Iskandar Turkee (Gabungan Parti Sarawak), Stevenson Joseph Sumbang (Parti Bumi Kenyalang) and Chieng Lea Phing (Sarawak People's Aspiration Party).

Abdul Ghani said polling was proceeding smoothly with no untoward incidents.

"We have not received any reports so far. It shows that voters in Jepak are casting their votes in a proper and peaceful manner," he added.

Abdul Ghani also said the by-election results will be announced by 9pm as the furthest polling station was only an hour away.

He said ballots would be counted at the voting streams at each polling station and tallied at the Civic Centre here.
