KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will continue to reach out to youths in the remaining days of campaigning for the Jepak by-election.

GPS candidate Iskandar Turkee said various strategies and approaches would be used to engage this group of voters.

"We will hold programmes to reach out to youths so that they will turn out to vote. We want to instil in them the importance of exercising their democratic responsibility," he told reporters after a Pasar Tamu Bintulu walkabout on Thursday (Oct 26).

The Jepak by-election was called following the death of its assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip on Sept 15.

The constituency has 22,804 voters, who will head to the polls on Nov 4.

During the walkabout, Iskandar was joined by Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang from the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) and Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai from Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).

SUPP and PRS are component parties of GPS, along with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

"This shows the cooperation and commitment of GPS to ensure that the coalition will get as many votes as possible," Iskandar said.

He added that issues raised by the traders during the walkabout would be brought up to the Bintulu Development Authority for further action.

"The issues were mainly related to facilities, such as better lighting, air ventilation and security for their goods," he said.

Meanwhile, trader Saleha Mat said she hoped Iskandar would follow in Talib's footsteps in caring for the people.

"Talib served everyone well regardless of their background. I hope the new candidate will emulate him," she said.
