Cops staying vigilant on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman will be monitoring social media accounts attempting to stir public anxiety and hatred following the recent attacks on national football players.

Police are especially interested in the social media account under the name of “Muhammad Imran Suresh” whose user claimed to have information related to the incident.

However, Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said it is a fake account.

He said police would not hesitate to take action against social media users believed to be stirring hatred.

“We will be monitoring all these accounts and will also be requesting the help of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission.

“We cannot give any room to those who intend to take advantage of the situation and cause disturbances,” he said yesterday.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said based on their checks so far, an Instagram account also bearing the name Muhammad Imran Suresh is fake.

“This account has been seen trying to cause disturbances and create a negative perception over the acid attack on Faisal Halim,” he said, referring to the winger who was splashed with acid on May 5.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said no police reports had yet been lodged over these social media accounts.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said police are investigating the attacks from all angles.

“Any individual with relevant information can come forward instead of issuing statements, as it may affect the investigation,” Bernama reported Razarudin as saying.

He added that the investigation on a suspect who was remanded on Tuesday is ongoing.

Earlier, the owner of an Instagram account had claimed that the police had summoned him to help in the investigation.
