MACC arrests civil servant in Melaka over RM7,500 bribe

MELAKA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a 41-year-old civil servant over an alleged RM7,500 bribe.

The suspect - who had formerly served at a public higher-learning institution here - was produced at the Magistrate's Court here on Tuesday (May 7) where a five-day remand order was issued by Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni.

He allegedly received kickbacks from two contractors for expediting the claim process on maintenance works done at the institution in 2022.

The civil servant is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum of 20 years' jail, a fine amounting to no more than five times the amount of bribe received, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie said when contacted that the suspect was arrested when he turned to assist in the investigation at 2pm on Monday (May 6).
