IPOH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) has pledged RM200,000 for the welfare of the Sikh community in Perak.
He said the government would not discriminate against any race or religion in the fight against poverty.
“I find it unacceptable that the hardcore poor does not have enough to eat, or the children not being able to attend school.
“It is our (government’s) duty that every single person is protected, including those from the minority groups,” the Prime Minister said in his speech at the state level Vaisakhi Day open house held at Stadium Indera Mulia here yesterday.
Anwar said it was important to preserve the rights of all Malaysians and honour their faith and religion.
“Never take this (unity) for granted. We need to preserve this,” he said.
“There is a small minority trying to sow the seed of discord among the races.”
He said that most Malaysians wanted the country to become a formidable force.
“I am confident that the country will be great,” Anwar added.
The event’s organising chairman Baldip Singh said in his speech that some sections of the community had been neglected despite the community having many professionals like doctors and lawyers.
“There are also Sikhs who are poor.
“I hope the government will consider some assistance for those in the B40 group,” Baldip said.
