Melaka politicians have international travel restrictions lifted after paying tax arrears

MELAKA: The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) lifted international travel restrictions on two Melaka politicians after they paid their tax arrears.

Melaka LHDN director Mohd Shahriz Ramli (pic) said the two politicians are in their 40s and have been unable to pay the thousands of ringgit in tax arrears owed for a long time.

"However, the restrictions were lifted this year after they managed to settle the arrears in instalments," he said after a meeting with the Melaka Media Practitioners' Club (Pendika) at the LHDN office in Ayer Keroh here on Tuesday (April 30).

Mohd Shahriz said his team will track errant taxpayers regardless of their societal positions and status.

"Politicians must set a good example by not evading taxes and think that LHDN wouldn't initiate action against them due to their advantageous positions," he said.

Mohd Shahriz added that LHDN would take preliminary action on errant taxpayers by sending several letters, emails, and phone calls to the defaulters before the travel restriction is enforced.

He also shared that LHDN collected RM1.91bil in taxes for 2023 and anticipates collecting RM2.1bil this year.
