Downed MMEA copter's black box sent to Italy for analysis

PUTRAJAYA: The black box belonging to the maritime helicopter AW139 (M72-01), which had an emergency landing in waters off Pulau Angsa in Kuala Selangor on March 5, has been sent to the helicopter's manufacturer in Italy, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said the black box, which was retrieved on April 17, suffered some damage thus requiring the manufacturer to analyse its recording.

"It will take some time for the black box to be analysed.

"There was some damage (to the black box) and we have sent it to the manufacturer in Italy.

"They will be better equipped to analyse its contents and recording," he said after the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Hari Raya celebration on Monday (April 29).

It was reported that the black box was retrieved on April 17.

A team of MMEA divers found the black box during their 44th search mission in the waters off Kuala Selangor.

The first phase of the search for the black box was from March 6 till March 24, focusing on a 1km radius from the helicopter's emergency landing site.

Meanwhile on another matter, Saifuddin said MMEA officer Zainal Abas Komel, who was one of the two officers injured during a shootout in the waters off Sabah's Kunak district, had undergone two successful surgeries so far.

"He will be giving good follow-up treatment.

"The ministry is committed to making the welfare of the personnel its priority," he said.
