Johor authorities confiscate shoes with contentious logo in statewide inspections

JOHOR BARU: Johor state religious authorities have confiscated several pairs of shoes with the contentious logo that appears to resemble the word "Allah" in Arabic script during a statewide inspection.

Johor Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid (pic) said that the checks were made at a few shopping centres in the state following reports of the incident.

“The inspection was made based on a social media post that went viral claiming that there are shoes that have a logo resembling the word "Allah" in Arabic script.

“Surveillance and checks were made statewide this evening by the committee members such as the police, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, local authorities, and the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ),” he said in a statement here Sunday (April 7).

Mohd Fared said that members of the public are urged to remain calm and let the authorities conduct investigations regarding the matter.

“The Johor government will remain adamant and will not compromise on issues that are deemed insulting to the word of “Allah” and the glory of Islam,” he said.

Meanwhile, Johor police chief Comm M. Kumar said that investigations are still ongoing and that the police will issue a statement regarding the matter soon.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that police have opened an investigation into a contentious shoe logo that appeared to resemble the word "Allah" in Arabic script.

Eight police reports have been received so far nationwide, and investigation papers has been opened to probe the matter under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
