Wan Saiful spared six-month suspension after apology

Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan has been spared the possibility of a six-month suspension after issuing an apology for making baseless allegations of corruption against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament last week.

The Tasek Gelugor MP also apologised to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, over his remarks.

“I retract my statement on Feb 28 and 29, and I apologise.

“With all humility, if I had touched on matters pertaining to His Majesty, I apologise and retract my remarks,” he said in Parliament yesterday.

Last week, Wan Saiful made reference during his debate on the motion of thanks on the royal address, alluding to His Majesty and Anwar.

“Corruption means abuse of power and he who abuses his power meets with His Majesty every week before the Cabinet meeting,” he reportedly said in the House.

The suspension motion was tabled by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi after the Oral Question Time yesterday.

However, Ahmad Zahid withdrew his motion following the advice of Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul that the matter had been resolved with Wan Saiful’s apology.

“I consider this episode to have passed. Let’s move forward and discuss the people’s issues with decorum... It will be fruitful,” said Johari.

Wan Saiful then expressed appreciation to the Speaker and Ahmad Zahid.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin also thanked Johari for his wise action and for resolving the matter well.

“The people can see that MPs are responsible for the future of religion, race and country,” he said.
