Annual health check-ups for MPs a must, says Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: Mandatory annual medical check-ups for MPs will be a permanent fixture, says Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

“Alhamdulilah, everyone including the prime minister had done their (check-up) because I told them if you don’t do your (health) examination, I will go after you,” the Dewan Rakyat Speaker said during a special meeting with media practitioners on Monday (Feb 19).

Similarly, MPs will be notified to do their medical check-ups for this year.

“This is very important because we want to keep our MPs healthy,” he said.

He added that some may even have underlying health problems that can only be detected by a physician.

He said this is why MPs are required to go through a health screening.

“It is very expensive to run a by-election so we must make sure they finish their term,” he said.

He reiterated that he has seen at least 11 MPs collapse during his time in the House for the past 15 years.

In September, Johari announced that all MPs had to undergo a mandatory health examination by Oct 31 as a precautionary measure.
