Police taking death threats against Nik Elin seriously

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are not taking lightly the death threats against lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said police have received five reports of death threats made against her.

“Those who make threats do not benefit from it,” he told reporters after visiting the General Operations Force Central Brigade headquarters in Cheras here yesterday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain and Bukit Aman Logistics Department director Datuk Seri Sahabudin Abd Manan were also part of the visit.

It was reported two days ago that police had identified the owners of three social media accounts believed to be linked to death threats against the lawyer.

Nik Elin and her daughter, Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Tengku Abdul Rahman, had filed a constitutional challenge on May 25 last year against 18 provisions under Kelantan’s syariah criminal code.

The challenge, under Article 4(4) of the Federal Constitution, named the Kelantan government as the sole respondent.

Last week, the Federal Court ruled in an 8-1 decision that 16 of the 18 provisions were unconstitutional as the offences were already covered by federal laws.
