Tallying cash donations made on Thaipusam

BATU Caves temple officials have begun the task of counting the cash donations received during the Thaipusam festival, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The work began on Saturday morning headed by the KL Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Devasthanam treasurer Datuk P. Alagan and temple trustees.

The counting of the donations which were brought in white and black cloth bags began at the Mariamman Temple at around 10am in full view of the public.

Forestry officials had originally caught the elephant in the Wayanad area after it had entered residential and farming areas.

The elephant was fitted with a tracking collar with the help of tranquilisers to allow authorities to track its movement.

The elephant returned to the Wayanad area causing concern among residents so the authorities captured it a second time after an 18-hour effort.

The elephant was given a second tranquiliser shot and transported to the Ramapura Elephant Camp in Karnataka where it died.
