Mohd Hasan meets Jokowi, Indonesian counterpart during one-day visit

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is in Jakarta for his first visit to Indonesia since he became Foreign Minister in December.

During the one-day trip, he paid a courtesy call on Indonesian President Joko Widodo and also held discussions with his counterpart Retno Marsudi.

In a statement on Tuesday (Feb 6), Wisma Putra said Mohamad's visit was a continuation of the efforts by the government to further strengthen partnership with Indonesia and enhance cooperation at Asean level.

"The Foreign Minister also touched on the need to intensify border trade activities at Tebedu and Entikong in West Kalimantan in order to reach US$30bil (RM142.98bil) in annual trade as agreed to by both leaders.

"Mohamad also held a meeting to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest.

"The meeting was an opportunity for both sides to take stock of the progress of bilateral cooperation and explore new potential avenues towards further strengthening the existing partnership.

"Besides bilateral issues, the Foreign Minister also exchanged views with Jokowi and his Indonesian counterpart on regional and global developments, focusing on the situation in Myanmar and conflict in Palestine," read the statement.

Also discussed was discrimination against palm oil as Malaysia and Indonesia are the world's main exporting nations of the commodity.

Mohamad also discussed resolving the crisis in Myanmar through Asean with his Indonesian counterpart and emphasised the importance of Asean unity in addressing this issue.
