131 detainees escape from Bidor Immigration depot, one dies in crash


IPOH: A total of 131 Rohingya and Myanmar detainees at a temporary immigration detention centre in Bidor have escaped after a riot broke out at the centre.

Tapah OCPD Supt Mohd Naim Asnawi said on Friday (Feb 2) that the suspects included 115 Rohingya and 16 Myanmar nationals, all males.

He said one of the detainees is believed to have died after being involved in an accident along KM335 of the North-South Expressway.

“The Tapah police operations centre received a call at about 9.50pm on Thursday (Feb 1) saying that 131 of the detainees had escaped from the depot.

“Searches are being carried out by the Third Batallion of the General Operations Force (GOF), the state police contingent’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and Bukit Aman CID.

“The case is being investigated under Section 147 and Section 223/224 of the Penal Code, and efforts to locate the detainees who fled are being carried out.

“Those with information on the case are urged to call the operations center at 05-401 5222,” he said.
