His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia


His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim was born on Nov 22, 1958.

His Majesty is the eldest son of Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail and Almarhumah Enche’ Besar Hajah Khalsom binti Abdullah.

The Royal couple are blessed with six children – Johor Crown Prince and now Regent Tunku Ismail Idris, Tunku Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, Tunku Idris Iskandar Ismail Abdul Rahman, the late Tunku Abdul Jalil Iskandar Ibrahim Ismail, Tunku Abdul Rahman Hassanal Jeffri and Tunku Abu Bakar Mahmood Iskandar Ibrahim.

Johor Crown Prince

His Majesty was named as Heir to the throne and was proclaimed the Crown Prince of Johor on July 3, 1981.

Regent of Johor

His Majesty was appointed as the Regent of Johor from April 25, 1984 to April 25, 1989 when his father reigned as the eighth Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Sultan of Johor

His Majesty ascended to the throne of Johor on Jan 23, 2010 upon the demise of his father, Almarhum Sultan Iskandar. The official coronation was held on March 23, 2015.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong

His Majesty was sworn in as the King of Malaysia on Jan 31, 2024.

Education

Taman Didikan Kanak-Kanak Tunku Ampuan Mariam, Sekolah Temenggong Abdul Rahman, Islamic religious education from Sekolah Agama Air Molek, Trinity Grammar School in Australia, Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar or better known as English College, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, where His Majesty completed two courses – ‘Southeast Asian Strategic Studies’ and ‘International Law of the Seas’.

Military Training

  • His Majesty was trained in the Young Officers Tactical Course at the Malaysian Army Training School (Pulada) in Kota Tinggi where he was a platoon commander. Participated in the Young Officers Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, in the United States, where he also enrolled in an airborne and ranger course for infantry officers.
  • His Majesty attended the American Special Forces Green Beret and Pathfinder Course. He completed 19 parachute jumps, of which eight were executed at night, thus earning him the prestigious Green Beret and wings.
  • His Majesty is also a United States SEAL (sea, air and land) member and an honorary member of the Indonesian red beret KOPASSUS after making several successful parachute jumps in Bandung, Indonesia.
  • His Majesty went through helicopter pilot training with the Royal Malaysian Air Force. His Majesty was the parade commander and received his wings from his father, Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, at a passing out parade on April 26, 1982.
  • His Majesty also trained as a Royal Malaysian Navy officer for three months at the RMN base in Lumut, Perak, thus making him a fully trained army, navy and air force officer.

Interests

  • His Majesty’s passion for sports is also well known. In his youth, he played polo not just locally, but also in tournaments in Singapore, the Philippines and Brunei. He earned the distinction of being the best polo player in Asia during the polo world qualifications in the 1990s. His Majesty also enjoys parasailing, boating (jet ski), parachuting, shooting and driving sports cars.
  • His Majesty founded the annual Kembara Mahkota Johor programme, which started in 2001. The expedition on vehicles, led by the Ruler, is aimed at forging closer ties between Johor’s royal family and the people through various programmes carried out at each stopover along the journey.
  • On June 30, 2011, His Majesty drove the last KTM train from Tanjong Pagar railway station in Singapore to Malaysia.
