Opposition's SD claim does not hold water, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Claims that the Opposition has sufficient numbers to topple the Federal Government through statutory declarations (SD) should be ignored, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“The SDs are not valid,” the Deputy Prime Minister said briefly after chairing a coordinating meeting between the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, which he heads, and the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) at Menara Felda on Tuesday (Jan 9).

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president and Barisan Nasional chairman, had been asked to comment on whether or not action would be taken against any Barisan MPs who signed SDs supporting a change of Federal Government.

Ahmad Zahid had previously said that, given the anti-party hopping laws in place, any decision to change support for a government must be done en bloc at party level.

On Sunday (Jan 7), Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor claimed that Perikatan Nasional already had enough SDs to overthrow the government.

However, the Perikatan election director did not provide details, including the number of SDs in hand.

Asked about claims that some Umno or Barisan MPs had signed SDs, Ahmad Zahid said the question did not arise as such documents did not exist.
