Floods: Slight increase in number of evacuees in Johor


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in the state has slightly increased to 7,460 people at 4pm compared to 7,324 people at 8am on Tuesday (Jan 9).

The state disaster management committee said that all of the victims are currently placed at 57 temporary relief centres (PPS) in six flood-affected districts.

“As of 4pm, there are 4,678 flood victims in Kota Tinggi, 1,592 victims in Kluang, 1,007 victims in Johor Baru, 86 victims in Kulai, 75 victims in Segamat, and 22 victims in Pontian.

“In general, there are 2,095 families that are still being placed at the PPS,” it said in a statement here.

There are also four PPS that house more than 200 people, namely Dewan Kampung Maju Jaya in Johor Baru with 300 victims, SK Batu 3 in Kluang with 350 victims, Arena Segitiga Desa Sejahtera with 357 victims, and Dewan Raya Taman Kota Jaya with 376 victims in Kota Tinggi.

“Nine roads have also been closed off to all vehicles after the road was flooded,” it added.

The roads are Jalan Sungai Telor, Jalan Semanggar Dalam, Jalan Tun Sri Lanang, Jalan Mawai Lama, Jalan Kampung Kelantan, and Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang in Kota Tinggi.

While in Johor Baru, the closed roads are Jalan Kangkar Tebrau and Jalan Sungai Tiram, and only one road is closed in Mersing, namely Jalan Tanah Abang.

There are also four rivers that have recorded a dangerous level reading, namely Sungai Kahang in Kluang, Sungai Tiram in Johor Baru, Sungai Kepala Orang, and Sungai Johor in Kota Tinggi.
