Floods: Number of victims in Johor expected to rise today

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has not changed much, as there are still 7,324 evacuees in the state seeking shelter at the temporary relief centres as of 8am on Tuesday (Jan 9).

The state disaster management committee said the victims are from 2,062 families at 49 relief centres in six flood-affected districts: Kota Tinggi, Johor Baru, Kluang, Kulai, Pontian and Segamat.

“The number of flood victims is now 7,324 at 8am compared to 7,344 people at 8pm on Monday night (Jan 8).

“The majority of the victims are from Kota Tinggi, with 4,707 people placed at 26 PPS,” it said in a statement.

This is followed by Kluang with 1,601 victims, Johor Baru with 840 victims, Kulai with 86 victims, Segamat with 73 victims and Pontian with 17 victims.

Meanwhile, Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Siti Rohani Nadir said that more victims are expected to be rescued today following the ongoing rain since last night.

“We expect more people will be evacuated in Kota Tinggi.

“We also expect a flash flood to occur around Johor Baru following the forecasted high tide at 9.12am,” she said.
