PUTRAJAYA: A three-day Bumiputra Economic Congress will be held soon to draw up an economic strategy for the community that will swiftly be put into action, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the congress, which is scheduled for Feb 29 to March 2, will submit a resolution to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the final day.

"It will involve 10 clusters related to the involvement of the bumiputra community within and outside the economic field," he told a press conference at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry here on Friday (Jan 5).

The congress will be co-organised by the ministry, which Ahmad Zahid heads, and the Economy Ministry.

In December, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said a new bumiputra policy is expected to be presented at the congress.

Ahmad Zahid also noted that he had appointed a chairman for each cluster with a secretariat to see the plans through to fruition.

"It will not just be resolutions on paper... we have formed a secretariat to monitor the implementation of the plans (by) phases," he added.

Citing an example, he said Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) was established during the first Bumiputra Economic Congress and played a pivotal role in helping the community.

Asked if underperforming subsidiaries under his ministry's agencies had been shut down or merged, he said some of them had ceased operations.

"We offered a management buyout to the respective companies," he added.
