16 SPM exam centres at risk of being flooded

PERMAISURI: Sixteen examination centres in the state are at risk of being hit by a fourth wave of floods, says the Education Ministry.

Its deputy director-general (professionalism development sector) Shafruddin Ali Hussin said it involved 224 students who would be sitting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination in Hulu Terengganu, Setiu, Dungun and Besut.

He said the state Education Department had made necessary preparations such as relocating students to hostels or nearby schools to ensure exams could be held as scheduled from Jan 31 to March 7.

“Necessary steps have been taken to ensure the students can sit for the SPM examination,” he said when met after the post-flood clean-up operation at SK Sungai Las here yesterday.

Shafruddin said losses incurred by schools affected by floods in Terengganu were estimated at RM340,000 involving damage to furniture and equipment.

He said the ministry had been informed of the cost of repairs and allocations would be channelled to the affected schools soon.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Committee secretariat said Terengganu had fully recovered from the third wave of floods, which hit the state since Dec 23. — Bernama byy
