MMEA detains local fishing boat crewed by foreigners off Sekinchan

PETALING JAYA: A local fishing boat crewed by foreigners has been apprehended by the Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) after they were found to have been operating illegally.

MMEA said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 20) that the boat was stopped nine nautical miles South-West off Sungai Buring, Sekinchan on Monday (Dec 18) after the vessel was seen being steered suspiciously.

"The Class B boat was stopped at around 4.20pm. Further checks showed that the vessel had gone against the terms of its license due to the hiring of foreigners without permits," MMEA Selangor director Maritime Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said.

The crew was made up of four Myanmar nationals aged between 19 and 3.

He added that the crew was also arrested under the Immigration Act due to their identification papers being suspect.

All have been brought to the Pulau Indah marine police base for further action.
