The late Sulaiman Abdullah held firm to principles of justice and human rights, says PM


KUALA LUMPUR: Calling the late Datuk Sulaiman Abdullah a close friend, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he is saddened by the prominent lawyer's passing.

Anwar said the former Bar Council president was not just a lawyer but a friend who stood by him and his family through dark and bitter years.

"His conviction and conscience that held firm to the principles of justice and human rights cannot be denied. I was deeply affected by the news while in Tokyo on a work trip," he said on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday (Dec 19).

Anwar also extended his condolences and prayers to the family.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail remembered Sulaiman for his service and contribution especially during the time he defended Anwar.

"I received the sad news of his demise this morning. His service and contribution, especially during the bitter time of the struggle for justice and reform in defending Anwar, impressed all of us.

"Let us all pray that his soul is showered with mercy, be forgiven of sins, be accepted for good deeds and be placed in heaven.

"My condolences to the family," he said in a post on social media.

The renowned lawyer died on Monday (Dec 18) afternoon at the age of 77.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his son, actor and director Huzir Sulaiman, who said that although his father faced various health challenges, his sharp and intelligent mind remained unaffected.

"I regret to inform you that my father, Datuk Sulaiman Abdullah, has passed away," he said in a short message.

Huzir said funeral rites will take place at 1.10pm on Tuesday (Dec 19) at Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Aziz on Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya.
