Reminder to turn off appliances

KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been reminded to prioritise safety when using electricity and gas appliances, particularly during the flood season.

The Energy Commission has highlighted a list of flood risks including fallen electricity poles, severed electricity cables and faulty electrical and gas appliances while sharing tips to ensure the safe use of these equipment before, during and after floods.

All electrical appliances should be stored on high ground safe from floodwaters and the main switch of the unit’s electric distribution board should be turned off before evacuation, it said in a statement, Bernama reported.

It also said all electric connections separate from the main switch, including solar photovoltaic systems and electric gates should be shut off, along with any gas pipe or gas cylinder to avoid any untoward incident.

“The people should avoid going through areas with electric cables or electricity supply installations such as substations or switchrooms that might be flooded and not touch any pole or structure that might conduct electricity to avoid electrocution,” it reminded.

It also warned people not to try to move any fallen electricity pole or severed electricity cables, and instead, report such incidents immediately to the electric utility company.

For the safe use of electrical and gas appliances post-floods, the commission said the main switch on the electric distribution board and all gas mains need to be in the off position before any cleaning work commences and to ensure that all electrical appliances are in good and dry condition before turning the main switch on.

It also warned against using any electrical or gas appliance if people had any doubt regarding their safety and to get assistance from registered electricity or gas contractors.
