Traps set up in Bagan Datuk after reports of rampaging animals

IPOH: Traps have been set up following reports of what is believed to be wild animals damaging the crops of residents in four Bagan Datuk villages over the past two weeks, says the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan).

Its Perak director Yusoff Shariff said that Perhilitan had set up two animal traps in Kampung Sungai Balai Darat on Sunday (Dec 10) as a precautionary measure, adding that residents have been advised to remain vigilant due to threat of wild animals.

"Based on footprints observed, the animals could be dogs. However, we will conduct further investigations," he said when contacted by Bernama on Tuesday (Dec 12).

He also urged the public to immediately inform Perhilitan if they see wild animals – including bears, as claimed by residents – and not to act on their own.

Animals have been damaging banana crops for the past two weeks, causing concern among residents.

This was based on the discovery of animal footprints and claw marks on dozens of banana trees planted by residents in Kampung Sungai Lanchang, Kampung Sungai Nipah Darat, Kampung Pasang Api and Kampung Sungai Balai Darat. – Bernama
