Over 23,000 motorists caught without driving licence during nationwide traffic ops

KOTA KINABALU: Over 23,000 motorists were caught without a driving licence during the nationwide Ops Patuh Bersepadu 2023.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) senior enforcement director, Datuk Lokman Jamaan, said 23,748 notices were issued to road users for the offence during the 14-day operation, which ended on Friday (Nov 24).

“We inspected 554,372 vehicles throughout the exercise,” he said during a JPJ operation in Likas on Sunday (Nov 26).

He added that most offenders were motorists aged 15 to 35.

“We also issued 17,447 notices for expired road taxes and 13,857 notices for vehicles found not having insurance protection.

“Other notices were for technical offences (12,191), no vocational driving licences (4,902) and overloaded vehicles (2,329),” Lokman said.

He said that JPJ detected seven other main offences in the operation, namely queue cutting, running the red light, using mobile phones while driving and not using safety belts, among others

He added that they also took action against 4,797 foreigners for various traffic offences.

Lokman said they were also focused on enforcing rules on offences related to the modification of vehicles not according to the approved technical standard.
