One killed and 11 orphans injured in crash

KOTA TINGGI: Eleven orphans, fresh off a sports event, were hurt in an accident near here, which left another motorist dead.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said the crash took place at KM9.5 of Jalan Sungai Sayong-Tenggara at around 7.10pm on Friday.

“The driver of a Nissan Sentra, which was heading towards Kota Tinggi, tried to overtake the vehicle in front of it by entering the opposite lane.

“The van carrying the orphans in the opposite side could not swerve in time and collided with the car. The impact of the crash caused the 53-year-old car driver to be pinned to his seat and he died at the scene,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Supt Hussin said the seven boys and four girls from Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim Bandar Tenggara were on their way back after a sports event when they met with the accident.

He said that the 41-year-old van driver and the orphans, aged nine to 15, sustained injuries and one of the girls broke her thigh. They were sent to Hospital Temenggong Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim in Kulai for treatment, he said.

The accident was framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and resulting in death, Supt Hussin added.
