Close to 2,000 nabbed for illegal gambling

KUALA LUMPUR: Close to 2,000 individuals were detained following a massive operation on illegal gambling and illegal 4D nationwide.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the operation, codenamed Ops Dadu Khas, was conducted for two weeks from Sept 22 to Oct 5.

"We raided 735 online gambling operations during that period and nabbed 804 people.

"We also seized various items with a total worth of RM513,025, including RM108,325 cash, 792 mobile phones, laptops as well as tablets," he told a press conference in Bukit Aman on Wednesday (Oct 11).

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said for illegal 4D, 1,050 raids were conducted.

"We detained 1,069 individuals as well as seized more than RM600,000 worth of items including 907 mobile phones and RM161,425 cash," he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said police aim to expedite the prosecution of those detained.

"For online gambling, 125 investigation papers (IPs) have been prosecuted while for illegal 4D, 257 IPs have been prosecuted," he added.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said investigations showed that illegal gambling operators have changed their modus operandi by being mobile.

"They are always moving to avoid detection by the authorities and that is why we have to be one step ahead.

"They also have various layers in their syndicates to complicate investigations and to make it hard to prosecute the masterminds," he said while urging the public to cooperate with the police in supplying relevant information on these illegal activities.
