PUTRAJAYA: A foreign man who offered forged documents to Myanmar and Bangladesh nationals has been picked up by the Immigration Department.
The Myanmar national in his 30s was detained in a sting operation last Thursday (July 13).
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the suspect, who went by the name "Ayake", offered Myanmar passports, temporary work permits, Myanmar marriage certificates, UNHCR cards, CIDB cards, Myanmar driving licences – all forgeries – for between RM200 and RM1,000.
"Checks revealed the suspect himself holds a fake Myanmar passport.
"He offered his services via WhatsApp," he told reporters at Immigration headquarters here on Tuesday (July 18).
He said the department monitored the man's activities for two months before he was arrested en route to delivering forged temporary work permits to a buyer at Dataran Merdeka.
"The suspect tried to flee when our personnel approached him. A short pursuit followed, before he was eventually detained.
"When we checked the suspect, we found one temporary work permit sticker on him while checks on the car he was driving found two Myanmar passports, RM26,000 cash and another temporary work permit sticker," he said.
It is believed the suspect has been operating since before the movement control order (MCO) in 2020.
He said the suspect then led Immigration personnel to a residential unit in Sentul where 26 UNHCR cards, two CIDB cards, three temporary work permits, eight Myanmar passports, one Myanmar driving licence and RM1,500 cash were found.
"The documents seized are all believed to be fake.
"The suspect focussed his operations on the Klang Valley area and prioritised clientele from Myanmar and Bangladesh," he said, adding that "Ayake" made at least RM360,000 yearly.
He said the suspect was being detained at the Putrajaya Immigration depot to facilitate investigations.
