KUALA LUMPUR: Stop asking for positions, contracts or titles and focus on rebuilding Umno instead, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The Umno deputy president said instead of demanding handouts, members should focus on rebuilding the party and ensuring its continuity.

"Do not be swayed by the glitter and rewards that come with power, just because we are currently part of the government," he said when opening the Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings meeting here at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (June 7).

He said that a plan to groom future Umno leaders was important so that they could be given training and exposure.

"The party will give opportunities to anyone as long as they have a strong character, are honest and have the interests of the country and people at heart.

"Another quality of an Umno leader should be one who can withstand tests, yet remain loyal and patient," he added.

Acknowledging that Umno could no longer isolate younger party members, Mohamad said they should not merely voice their thoughts on social media without conveying them to the leadership.

Mohamad also proposed that Umno drafts a modern and progressive blueprint on the Malay agenda and convince Malays that the party has clear plans for them.

"This will separate us from those who ride on religion and race in the name of politics," said Mohamad.

He also voiced concerns on trends which he described as going against the values cast in the Federal Constitution that threaten unity and creates anxiety among Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Also present were Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, vice-presidents Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin, Datuk Johari Ghani and Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.

The Umno general assembly that began on Wednesday (June 7) will take place till Saturday (June 10).
