I’ve already declared my assets, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he has no problem disclosing his wealth, as requested by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Tambun MP said he was one of those who had done so to prove transparency to the people.

“The person who did not (declare assets) is him (Tun Mahathir).

“Recently, I declared a house worth RM11mil in Segambut,” he said after attending the Malaysia Madani Aidilfitri celebration at Datatan Merdeka here yesterday, Bernama reported.

Last Monday, Dr Mahathir has accused Anwar of helping the latter’s cronies when he was in the Cabinet in the 1990s.

He also challenged the Pakatan Harapan chairman to reveal the wealth he had amassed during his stint as deputy prime minister and finance minister.

“Then, help the rakyat with your own money, not the government’s money,” he said.

On May 3, Dr Mahathir filed a RM150mil defamation suit against Anwar over an alleged slanderous speech he made at an event at Stadium Melawati in Shah Alam, Selangor, on March 18.

He claimed that Anwar had alluded to him in the speech when he referred to “a person in power for 22 years and 22 months”.

He said the statements by Anwar, as Prime Minister, had a far more devastating effect than any other individual in Malaysia.
