IGP: We’ll wait for Jho Low

KUALA LUMPUR: Investigations into Low Taek Jho or Jho Low (pic) in relation to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case will go on until he is successfully brought back to the country, says Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

The Inspector-General of Police said the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) were working to bring back the fugitive businessman.

“Jho Low was charged under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001 in 2018 although he did not appear (in court).

“The police had indeed opened an investigation paper and if the subject (Jho Low) can be returned to Malaysia, of course we will pursue the charges,” he said after attending the Ops Selamat Best Contingent and District Award in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Bukit Aman here yesterday.

On May 5, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government was negotiating with overseas authorities to secure the return of Low, but refused to confirm the whereabouts of the fugitive businessman.

According to Anwar, the process was very complicated because it involves another country, intelligence services and Interpol.

Meanwhile, commenting on the number of investigation papers and arrests made since the establishment of the 3R Investigation Task Force (which focuses on race, religion and royalty issues) on March 22, Acryl Sani said the police had opened 19 investigation papers and arrested 12 people.

“Instructions for each case reported to the police include information relating to the occurrence of the offence and the investigation papers must be completed within seven days before being referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers.

“Such actions will be taken continuously to ensure the harmony and public order in this multiracial country is always maintained,” he said.
