JOHOR BARU: There are no plans to limit sports and outdoor activities for tertiary education students for now, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Higher Education Minister said the current hot weather does not affect the operations of higher education institutes as classes are mostly conducted in air-conditioned rooms.

“The Higher Education Ministry has no plans to limit their activities like participating in sports, as such outdoor activities are not compulsory for the students, unlike in schools.

“The tertiary students usually take part in the activities on their own accord.

“Maybe if the situation gets worse, we might limit outdoor activities but for now there are no such plans,” he told reporters when met at the Johor Umno veterans‘ Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at the party’s headquarters here on Saturday (May 6).

The Kota Tinggi MP was asked to comment about the ongoing hot weather, which led to the Education Ministry’s decision on Wednesday (May 3) to allow students and teachers in all education institutions under its purview to be in decent casual wear and sports attire.

The ministry said in a statement that they always emphasised on the welfare, health and safety of students, teachers and (administrators) during the hot spell and prolonged drought that is hitting the country.

Such hot weather can trigger harmful heatwaves that are detrimental to health, it said.
