Unity govt will endure till GE16, Hamzah's SD claims a 'weekly daydream,' says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: The unity government will last until the next general election, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said that he was very confident of the unity government serving the full term and described the Opposition's claims that they had the numbers as a "weekly daydream".

He also said that if Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin claimed to have enough statutory declaration (SD) from MPs backing him as the next prime minister, he could bring it to the august House.

"If he has it, then when Parliament sits, he can bring the SD, it's no problem.

"It's like his weekly daydream. (He says it) before Raya, before fasting month, before Hari Raya Aidilfitri, before Thaipusam, Chinese New Year.

"God willing, the unity government will remain until the next general election. I'm very confident, otherwise I wouldn't say," he told reporters at the Malaysian Red Crescent headquarters here on Friday (May 5).

Anwar had been asked to comment on rumours that there were enough SD from MPs backing Hamzah as the next prime minister.

On May 1, it was reported that Anwar did not deny that there was a bid to topple the unity government but said the plot did not have any strong basis and described those behind it as daydreamers.

Earlier, he had launched the Malaysian Red Crescent 75th anniversary and officiated the humanitarian organisation's national headquarters.

In his speech at the event, Anwar had announced an allocation of RM3mil in total for emergency rescue efforts and capacity development.

He said that the government has agreed to allocate RM1mil for the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to revive its 999 emergency ambulance service through the Welfare Department.

He also announced a disaster preparedness grant of RM1mil for the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) and another RM1mil for capacity building preparations at the headquarters and states.
