Johor floods: Conditions worsen with 42,704 evacuees state-wide

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood evacuees in Johor continue has increased and exceeded the 40,000 mark.

The State Disaster Management Committee said as of 8pm, the number of flood victims in the nine affected districts had risen up to 42,704 from 39,476 just four hours ago.

"Another 13 temporary relief centres have been opened while eight have been closed between 4pm and 8pm on Saturday (March 4).

"At the moment, there are a total of 252 relief centres that are still operating and are providing shelter to some 12,408 victims," it said in a statement.

It added that Segamat remained the worst-hit district with some 13,292 evacuees seeking shelter at 76 flood relief centres.

"The number of evacuees in Batu Pahat, which is the second worst-hit district, has also seen a significant increase from only 9,385 people at 4pm to 12,286 as of 8pm.

"This is followed by Kluang (5,292), Muar (3,862), Kota Tinggi (3,257), Tangkak (2,912), Mersing (911), Johor Baru (517) and Pontian (327)," it said in a statement on Saturday.
