Floods: Surge of 2,000 new flood evacuees in Johor

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood evacuees in Johor has seen an increase of more than 2,000 people in just four hours.

The Johor Disaster Management Committee said as of 4pm on Saturday (March 4), the number of flood victims in the nine affected districts was 39,476, up from 37,258 at noon.

"Another 11 temporary relief centres have been opened to provide shelter to the increasing number of victims.

"At the moment, there are a total of 247 relief centres operating, providing shelter to 11,463 victims," it said in a statement here on Saturday.

It added that Segamat remains as the worst-hit district with some 13,583 evacuees seeking shelter at 78 flood relief centres.

"This was followed by Batu Pahat with 9,385 evacuees, Kluang (5,299), Muar (3,492), Kota Tinggi (3,349), Tangkak (2,664), Mersing (763), Johor Baru (462) and Pontian (379)," it said.

It noted that seven districts have recorded an increase in the number of victims while two, Mersing and Johor Baru, have recorded a drop.

It also noted that all districts in Johor have been experiencing rainy weather for the past two days.
