SEREMBAN: A woman who attacked an ex-colleague with a glass at a restaurant, causing her injuries, was fined RM3,000 in default eight months' jail by the Magistrate's Court here Tuesday (Feb 14).
Nur Shahirah Choo Fui Tze Chen, 40 who is now heavily pregnant, pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to her before magistrate Mohamad Ibrahim Mohammad Ghulam.
She was accused of committing the offence against 39-year-old Caimy Loris at around 11.15am at a restaurant in Kemayan Square on Dec 6.
Nur Shahirah was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine or whipping, or any two of those penalties, upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, both the accused and the victim were colleagues at a reflexology centre but Nur Shahirah was fired a few weeks before the incident at the restaurant.
The victim was having a drink with another friend when she received a call from an uncle asking about her wellbeing.
Suddenly, the suspect came from behind and began hitting the victim's head several times with a hard object.
The victim used her left arm to fend off the attacks and sustained several injuries including a broken thumb.
She then realised that her attacker was her former colleague.
In mitigation, the accused, who was represented by PA Krishnaveni from the Legal Aid Bureau, told the court she was remorseful for what she did.
The accused, who also had a 13-year-old child, said she was also due to give birth at any time.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Muhaimin Mohd Azman asked the court to impose a sentence that would deter would-be offenders.
