Disabled teenager drowns in Gua Musang river

GUA MUSANG: A group of teenage boys were swimming in Sungai Kombat, Felda Perasu, when tragedy struck and one of them, a disabled, drowned.

OCPD Supt Sik Choon Foo said the victim, Muhammad Fakhrul Imam Zulkepli, 16, had gone to the site with his friends at about 4.30pm on Thursday.

“The incident happened when the victim and a friend, known only as Amir, were said to have been drawn deeper into the waters.

“Two other friends managed to pull Amir out, but their attempts to save the victim by using a stick were unsuccessful as it broke.

“The victim was swept away by the currents,” he said in a statement, adding that the victim’s body was later found floating on the river.

Supt Sik said the victim’s friends tried to save him by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation but the attempts were unsuccessful.

He was rushed to a clinic but was certified dead by a medical assistant.

“The victim’s body was sent to Hospital Gua Musang, where a post-mortem found that he died due to drowning,” he said.

Supt Sik said investigations found no criminal elements and that the case has been classified as sudden death.

In JOHOR BARU, the last temporary relief centre in Segamat housing flood victims was closed at 2pm yesterday.

The state Disaster Management Committee said the victims, all from Kampung Seberang Batu Badak, have been allowed to return home.

“A total of 22 victims from seven families were temporarily sheltered at Balairaya Kampung Seberang Batu Badak,’’ it said in a statement.

The water level at Sungai Batu Pahat in Bekok has surpassed the dangerous level of 18.70m with its current level of 18.72m.

The statement added that Jalan Sungai Tiram-Ulu Tebrau in Kulai is still closed to all vehicles following a landslide along the stretch.
