Boy, 6, found drowned in retention pond near Johor home

KULAI: A six-year-old boy who sneaked out of his home to go fishing alone was found drowned in a retention pond near his home here on Wednesday.

Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said that the parents last saw the boy sleeping in his room with his 17-year-old sister when they woke up to head for work at 6.30am at their home in Taman Sungai Mas.

“At about 10am, a friend informed the mother that her son was found unconscious at the retention pond.

“Firemen were called in to fish out the boy’s body from the pond,” he said, adding that initial investigations showed that the boy’s house was 50m from the pond.

ACP Tan said that the boy allegedly went to fish on his own as a fishing rod was discovered at the scene.

“The boy was pronounced dead due to drowning at about 11.15am by medical personnel,” he said, advising parents and guardians to be aware of their children’s movements and not to allow them to do activities at risky areas such as ponds, rivers and other water bodies without proper supervision.
