Temperature screening for all at Kedah entry points

GEORGE TOWN: In view of rising Covid-19 cases around the world, there will be more emphasis on screening all foreign tourists entering Kedah from any international entry point, says state health director Dr Othman Warijo.

He said all foreign tourists would be treated in the same manner and would have to follow the current national standard operating procedure (SOP).

“We have strengthened our fever and symptomatic screenings at all points of entry into Kedah.

“We will use infrared thermal scanners at all entry points into Kedah, and immigration staff will ask visitors about their symptoms, if any,” he added.

He said that for the moment, there are no extra SOPs for foreigners from specific countries.

“Everyone is treated the same when they cross the border.

“Firstly, when they go through the main gate (entry point), we have thermal scanners to check their temperature.

“If they have a fever (above 38°C), we will refer them to our Health Department staff stationed at the entry points to carry out a more comprehensive check.

“Then, when they pass through the immigration counter, the immigration staff will ask them about their symptoms.

“If they have a fever, coupled with a sore throat or difficulty breathing, they will be referred to our staff for further care,” he said.

In Penang, state tourism and creative economy committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the state government is closely monitoring Covid-19 cases and will take all the necessary preventive measures to prioritise public health and safety.

“The Covid-19 virus knows no border. As a result, the current SOP will apply to all foreign visitors.

“We will take the necessary measures to prevent and reduce the risk of spreading the virus. The guidelines to curb the virus shall apply to all international arrivals,” he said.

Yeoh said that for the moment, they have yet to receive any updates on the new guidelines.
