Cops raid shop house, seize fireworks worth more than RM200,000

KULAI: Fireworks worth more than RM200,000 were seized by the police in a raid of a shophouse at Jalan Seelong Jaya here.

Kulai OCPD Supt Tok Beng Yeow said that the police also arrested a 25-year-old man during the raid at about 4.30pm on Sunday (Jan 8).

“The shophouse was raided following information about the sale of unlicensed fireworks. We managed to seize some 8,217 units of various types of fireworks worth about RM222,619,” he said.

Supt Tok added that a local man was also arrested during the raid as he was unable to produce any documents and failed to adhere to the conditions set for his business license.

He added in a statement on Monday (Jan 9) that the suspect is being remanded for three days starting Monday (Jan 9) until Wednesday (Jan 11).

Supt Tok said that the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosive Substance Act 1957, which carries seven years imprisonment or a RM10,000 fine, or both upon conviction.

“We urge the public with information on any criminal acts to channel it to us at the Kulai police headquarters or by contacting us at 07-6637222,” he said.
