‘No record of Russian duo entering or exiting country’

PETALING JAYA: There is no record of the Russian couple who went viral for climbing to the top of the Merdeka 118 Tower exiting or entering the country, according to the Immigration Department.

However, a local daily reported a source in the department as saying that it would continue to investigate the matter.

“Checks revealed that both suspects are not inside the country. Investigations also found that there was no record in the Immigration Department system of them entering or leaving,” said the source quoted by Utusan Malaysia.

The authorities, added the source, are still investigating, including looking into the possibility of them entering Malaysia illegally.

Based on an analysis of CCTV footage at the tower, the source said there was also no glimpse of the couple trespassing on the building, which was yet to be operational.

“We have also called in nine individuals, including staff and workers at the tower, after the viral incident,” said the source.

The authorities, added the source, are still waiting for the video analysis results by CyberSecurity Malay-sia to determine if the video clip is genuine.

On Jan 2, the police said they were conducting further investigations to verify the authenticity of the video.
