GE15: Perlis Perikatan chairman sworn in as state's eighth MB

KANGAR: Perlis Perikatan Nasional chairman Mohd Shukri Ramli has been sworn in as the state's eighth Mentri Besar.

The swearing-in ceremony was held before the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail in Arau Palace at about 4.15pm Tuesday (Nov 22).

Mohd Shukri was appointed as Mentri Besar following Perikatan's landslide win in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Shukri was a schoolteacher from 1985 to 2013 before going into politics, contesting the Sanglang state seat in GE13.

He defended it in 2018 and again in GE15, this time fending off three challengers from Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan to garner 5,111 or 49% of votes cast for a majority of 3,355.

This will be the first time the Perlis mentri besar position is filled by a PAS representative, with all previous mentris besar from Umno.

Present during the ceremony was Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and all elected representatives, except Guar Sanji assemblyman Ridzuan Hashim.
