GE15: Quick resolution needed to current political situation, says group

PETALING JAYA: A quick resolution of the current political situation would be in the best interests of the people and the country as whole, says a parliamentary reform group.

The Coalition of the All-Party Parliamentary Group of Malaysia (APPGM) said that

Malaysians must remain calm as the country faces a hung Parliament following the 15th General Election.

It said while not ideal, a hung Parliament is a common scenario in any standard parliamentary democratic system, noting that this sort of situation had been resolved easily in other democratic countries.

In a statement, the group said that the people needed to have faith in the elected leadership to form an effective government for the next four years.

“We as Malaysians need to understand the essence of Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43 (2)(a) as enshrined in the Federal Constitution regarding the formation of the new government selected by the King based on the results of negotiations between the political parties concerned.

“We need to be confident in the maturity of the leadership chosen by the people, in their ability to reach a consensus to form a government that works for the sake of the people,” it said.

It added that the current situation proved that Malaysians had a different and mature stance when it came to making the right decisions, which is a sign of a healthy democracy.

APPGM comprises the Centre for Combating Corruption and Cronyism (C4), Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas), Rasuah Busters, the National Patriot Association (Patriot) and Undi18 among others.
