SHAH ALAM: Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says he will present statutory declarations (SDs) from MPs to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Monday (Nov 21) to show that he has the support to be appointed as prime minister.
Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president, said that the party supreme council held a meeting to discuss the matter on Sunday (Nov 20) night.
“We called for the emergency meeting to get a briefing on the results of the general election and also to brief the supreme council on my meeting with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders on their support for me as the 10th prime minister.
“I hope tomorrow (Monday), we will be able to send all the statutory declarations that will be needed to provide me with the majority needed to be appointed as the prime minister," he said after the meeting held at a resort here.
According to one leader, the meeting was called to discuss the plan for Monday following the statement from Istana Negara that the King has given a deadline of 2pm on Monday (Nov 21) for coalitions and political parties to form a government and present a candidate to be the prime minister.
Earlier, Muhyiddin had issued a statement stating that he now has support to form a government and be the next prime minister following GE15 results.
This, he said, comes after support from GPS that backs a coalition with Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to form the new Federal Government.
Muhyiddin was also asked about the statement by Barisan chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stating that he has never discussed with any other party on providing the support for Perikatan to form the next government or support Muhyiddin as the prime minister.
Muhyiddin responded that it was Ahmad Zahid's own views.
“The Federal Constitution states that the prime minister candidate needs the support from the majority of the MPs of the Dewan Rakyat and not the parties. The statement of Ahmad Zahid seems to be his own and not that of other Barisan MPs.
“The anti-party hopping law does not stop an MP from any other party to support a prime minister-candidate from another party. Not all the support comes from Barisan, but it also comes from GPS and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah as well as independent MPs too,” said Muhyiddin.
