KUALA LUMPUR: Fashion designer Peony Sin, who promotes kain songket in her design, is getting international attention.
The London College of Fashion graduate received an endorsement from celebrity chef Nusret Gokce, famously known as Salt Bae.
The Turkish chef owns a string of restaurants in Istanbul, London, New York and Dubai.
Sin, who is currently in London for the city’s just concluded fashion week, said she was thrilled to have the flamboyant restaurateur wear her songket jacket.
“It’s a real honour for Malaysia because this is a traditional hand-woven fabric with intricate gold and silver threads.
“It is different from the normal (fabric) used in suits, so he was truly excited,” she said in a telephone interview from London.
Salt Bae, whose technique for preparing and seasoning meat became an Internet meme, has 48.1 million followers on his Instagram account.
She met the condiment sprinkling chef at his restaurant Nusr-Et in Knightsbridge, London.
Sin, who accompanied shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo to the London fashion week, said her designs had received much media attention.
Welsh designer Julien Macdonald also wore her songket-designed jacket for the show.
In 2001, MacDonald was named British Designer of The Year.
“All this happened during the National Day and Malaysia Day season.
“(I) am happy that Jimmy and I kept the Malaysian flag flying,” said Sin, who is planning to have a counter or pop-up stall at the Harrods department store, which houses 5,000 designer brands.
