Bersih, Pakatan criticisms of Azalina's AG comment 'hypocritical', says Asyraf

PETALING JAYA: The Coalition of Free and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) and Pakatan Harapan are hypocritical for criticising Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said's recent comments on the Attorney General, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

In a Facebook post on Monday (Aug 29), the Umno Youth chief defended Azalina for her comments about Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun.

“Let’s not forget what Pakatan has done towards the judicial and national legal institution during their 22 months in power,” he said.

Asyraf was responding to Pakatan and Bersih's recent criticism against Azalina for voicing her views on wanting a government-friendly AG.

Azalina, an Umno supreme council member, aired her views at the Umno special gathering on Saturday (Aug 27), questioning why the AG was not from "one of our own".

She had said that in other parts of the world, a prime minister would appoint "his own person" to be the AG.

Asyraf cited several instances where Pakatan had resorted to similar actions when favouring certain individuals with regard to top judicial appointments but was now calling on the public to respect the judiciary.

He added that the Pakatan administration, when in power, had also prefered a government-friendly AG when appointing Tan Sri Tommy Thomas to the post.

Asyraf attached several links to news reports on the appointments which he said also drew criticism at the time.
