PETALING JAYA: The theme of this year’s National Day celebration is not only about strength and togetherness, but proof that Malaysians of all races are united.

Many said the theme of “Keluarga Malaysia Teguh Bersama” (Malaysian Family Stronger Together) for the 65th National Day is important as more should be done to promote unity.

Student Nor Azyani Tsania Mohd Nor, 19, said respect and kindness have always been part of Malaysian culture that transcends all races.

“Malaysians are respectful and kind to each other.

“An example is when someone becomes a victim of racism, the community will voice their displeasure of such deplorable behaviour,” she said.

Nor Azyani said non-Malays are now comfortable wearing baju kurung, while non-Indians can be seen wearing the saree.

She added that today’s youth are also more aware of the issues affecting all communities.

Chok Jia Xi, 19, said the progress Malaysians enjoy today was due to the peace and harmony among the people, and hopes the government would do more to promote arts and culture.

Heer Raj Prem Kumar, 26, said for him, the colour of one’s skin doesn’t matter as unity is strong among Malaysians.

“At the mamak stall where I hang out, people from different races sit together.

“We can relate, empathise with and understand each other,” said the content creator and creative agency owner.

“We are moving forward in terms of infrastructure and the way we adopt technology and learn from other countries shows we are improving.

“The country is going in the right direction, and I can see that Malaysia’s leaders and Malaysians themselves want the country to move forward,” he added.

Nixon Lee Juun Aun, 25, said the Covid-19 pandemic has actually brought the various communities closer to each other, as can be seen how people helped others in need regardless of race or religion.

Mohd Fikrilhakim Mohd Razali, 30, said he hopes that Malaysia can do more to improve the people’s lives economically.

He also urged a stronger effort to stamp out corruption.

“I am of the view that Malaysians are not yet truly united. We are only united within our own communities. I believe that the theme ‘Teguh Bersama’ is apt as we must strive harder to be stronger together,” he added.
