Hotelier’s favourite time of the year

Sharing and caring: Samford has been distributing the Jalur Gemilang in Melaka so everyone can get into the spirit of National Day.

MELAKA: A hotelier is distributing dozens of Jalur Gemilang to locals here as National Day approaches.

Dennis Samford said he decided to use his own money to buy the flags as he wanted more business premises and offices here to fly the national flag.

“This is the second year that I have decided to distribute flags for locals to decorate their premises to mark the month-long celebrations,” he said in an interview.

Samford, 47, said he takes pride in seeing the Jalur Gemilang being flown across the state.

“I was selected to represent my school in the National Day celebration when I was in lower secondary.

“Since then, I have never failed to observe this historic and joyous occasion,” he added.

Samford recalled that in the 1990s, locals would gather at public spots to celebrate National Day and the patriotic fever started on the eve of the event.

“It used to be a festive-like atmosphere where Jalur Gemilang were prominently displayed while motorcyclists would parade the flags along the streets until the wee hours of the morning.

“Sadly, I don’t experience the same celebrative atmosphere as before,” he added.

Samford said his intention was to create more merriment and to foster the spirit of nationhood.

“Flying the national flag is to show our love for the country. I don’t mind using my savings to buy the flags,” he said.

Samford said he would be hosting a dinner at his hotel in conjunction with National Day and would also organise several activities and programmes before Aug 31.
