PETALING JAYA: It’s easy for young goalkeeper Haziq Aiman Esa (pic) to catch the eye when he is training among the Malaysian national football team players.

The 21-year-old Melaka-born custodian is a fresh face in the Harimau Malaya squad and is the second tallest player in the group at 1.88m (6’1”), after centreback Junior Eldstal who stands 1.91m (6’2”).

Although he has been included on a developmental basis after being handpicked by coach Peter Cklamovski, Haziq has shown the qualities to be groomed as a future force for Malaysia.

He is currently training with the national team in Bangkok ahead of their final 2027 Asian Cup Group F qualifier against Vietnam in Nam Dinh on Tuesday.

Haziq , who is on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim to Melaka , has featured in 12 matches across all competitions this season. He has also represented Malaysia at Under-23 level.

While his height gives him an advantage in dealing with aerial balls, it is his agility and sharp shot-stopping that have caught the attention.

Despite Melaka’s inconsistent form, Haziq has stood out with a string of impressive saves to keep scorelines respectable.

His performances did not go unnoticed, earning him a place in the national set-up to gain exposure alongside more experienced goalkeepers.

“We have selected four goalkeepers, and Haziq has been included as a development player.

“This is common in world football, where we monitor emerging talent as part of a longer-term process,” said Cklamovski.

Haziq expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the senior squad.

“I’m grateful to be included in the main squad for the development programme.

“At first, it was tough training with the other goalkeepers and working under coach John Crowley.

“But as the camp progressed, I’ve adapted to the rhythm and intensity, and I’m really enjoying my time with the national team.

“The other senior goalkeepers Haziq Nadzli, Ahmad Syihan Hazmi and Azri Ghani have been very generous in sharing their knowledge and experiences.

“I want to become a better goalkeeper and prove myself so the coach will consider me for future international matches.”
