Elderly man dies after falling into ravine during hike


KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man died after falling into a ravine during a hike at the Taman Mawar hill in Sandakan district on Sunday (Aug 14) evening.

The 70-year-old was believed to have gone hiking alone when he slipped and fell into a 20ft ravine.

State Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations, Misran Bisara said they received call about the incident at about 6.20pm.

“Our team, together with medical officials, had reached the scene to find an unconscious man with severe wounds,” he said in a statement.

Medical officials later pronounced the victim dead on scene.

Misran said the victim was carried down the hill before the body was handed over to the police for further actions.

“Operations ceased at 8.35pm after the area was clear of any hazardous elements,” he said.
